NCJLT is
an organization dedicated to the promotion and development of Japanese
language teaching at the elementary, secondary, and higher education
levels across the United
States. The mission of NCJLT is to
support Japanese Language teachers and promote Japanese Language
education. The vision of NCJLT is to foster the study of Japanese
language and culture at the Pre-K-16 levels via supportive programs.
NCJLT Services and
Programs
- Six issues
(four digital, 2 print/color) of our Oshirase journal with
unique content, national and regional Japanese language field news,
upcoming events, special awards, teaching ideas and job postings.
- Active
promotion of the teaching and learning of Japanese language K-16 in
the United States.
- Cooperation
with our partner organization, the Association of Teachers of
Japanese(ATJ) to hold K-16 discussions on national standards,
articulation and other current issues.
- Support and
creation of professional development opportunities for Japanese
language teachers.
- Administration
of the Japanese National Honor Society JNHS for secondary
students.
- A yearly 'Nengajou' contest and
Yonkoma Manga contest for K-12 students at all levels.
- Organization
and sponsorship of the NCJLT portion of the yearly ACTFL conference.
In 2001 there were 25 NCJLT-sponsored sessions.
- Offering of
special awards, travel grants and recognition for teachers and
learners of Japanese, such as a national teachers' award,
professional development award, and grant to
attend ACTFL, as well as a scholarship for students.
- A website hosted,
designed and consistenly maintained by the board as well as an online
discussion board and powerful networking tool in
which all members can view an exhange ideas on any topic related to
Japanese language&culture and Japanese language instruction.
Members also have access to a photo and video gallery (1300+ files),
and a document database, which includes all important NCJLT
documents and presentations from ACTFL 2008.
Who Belongs to NCJLT
and How?
If you
are a member of one of our affiliates, then
you may already be a member of NCJLT. Please ask your local affiliate. If
you do not have a local affiliate, you may want to join NCJLT directly.
Our members consist of college and university level instructors, learners
of Japanese, and persons with a professional interest in the promotion of
Japanese language and culture teaching in the U.S.

àNATIONAL JAPANESE EXAM
|

Registration for
the National Japanese Exam has begun and will continue until January 31,
2010. The exam will be offered online throughout the month of March 2010.

Originally, the 2010 National Japanese Exam
was created for high school students in the 2nd semester of their 2nd
year of Japanese. Due to the number of requests made from members,
NCJLT, however, is pleased to announce that the 2010 NJE will also
be available to junior high/middle school students that have taken the
high school equivalent of one and a half years of Japanese or whose
courses have covered the material listed on the NJE Content.
The teacher of participating students must be a current NCJLT
member. There is a cost of $6 per student taking the exam. Below you will
find links to the content and framework of the exam. Sample questions
will be forth coming.

11/1/09
to 1/31/10: Online registration at www.quia.com/njeorder
2/15/10 to 2/25/10: Late registration window (additional fees apply) -
2/21/10: Teachers who registered on time receive username/password info
and instructions. -
2/28/10: Teachers who registered late receive username/password info and
instructions.
3/1/10 to 4/9/10: Exam window
5/1/10: Teachers receive results

Teacher Awards Update
|
|
|
The NCJLT Teacher Awards Committee is
pleased to announce the 2009 NCJLT Teacher Awards winners. The K-12 Level
Teacher Award goes to Ms. Taeko Tashibu of Roosevelt
High School in Seattle, Washington.
The College Level Teacher Award goes to Professor Satoru Shinagawa of the
University of Hawai’i Kapi’olani Community College, in Honolulu, Hawai. These awards have
recognized excellence in teaching, advocacy and leadership in Japanese
language and culture education, and contributions to the local community
since 2001. It is our honor to present these prestigious national awards
to Ms. Tashibu and Prof. Shinagawa. Congratulations!
